In our new ‘Get to know’ series, we will introduce a different member of staff each month, to give our customers insight into the different roles and expertise at the Hub and the people that perform them.
We would like to introduce Gemma Burke, our Transport Category Lead, working across the Estates and Digital and Ambulance Teams.
What is your role at the Hub?
I am the Transport Category Lead, which is split across the Estates and Digital and Ambulance Teams. I’ve been working for the Hub as an interim for around 18-months on the mental health vehicle and DCA procurements and have been successful in gaining a permanent role here. My new role will be spending two days a week in the Ambulance team as it won’t be long before we need to think about re-procuring these contracts. The other three will be spent in the Estates and Digital Team, where the procurement of a new courier framework will be my first big priority.
What is the biggest challenge you face in your role?
Balancing the requirements of all the Ambulance Trusts is very tricky. I have had to use all my stakeholder engagement and communication skills to understand the drivers and needs, and try to implement these whilst meeting procurement legislation.
What do you find most rewarding about your role, or working in the NHS?
I have worked in the public sector a long time – only two years in the NHS, but over eleven years in the Civil Service (Natural England and Defra). I did some temp work for a couple of charities when I was younger in the holidays too. I enjoy the element of giving back. The idea of making a difference to someone else’s life through my work is what I find rewarding.
What was your first job?
My first proper job was as a barista in Starbucks, in the summer whilst I was waiting for my GCSE results. Luckily the coffee menu wasn’t anywhere near as complicated back then!
Do you have any hobbies?
I have a nine year old and enjoy spending time with him – swimming and baking are our favourite activities to do together. I started running a few years ago and take part in events quite regularly. I’ve got my first marathon this summer. I also enjoy watch F1, listening to podcasts, and growing my own fruit and veg.
What is your dream holiday?
Am I allowed two?! Selfishly, a trip to watch the Singapore Grand Prix is on the bucket list. Otherwise, I’d love a family trip to Universal Orlando when Mario World opens up. It’s not open yet, so I’d better get saving.
